Therapy Dogs Bring Smiles to our Seniors

Ocean County - Do you own a therapy dog and would like to bring a smile to a senior citizen?  Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey (CVCJ) has a rewarding opportunity for you.  Caregiver Canines is a program where we match therapy dogs with homebound senior citizens for a friendly visit bringing smiles and unconditional love to our seniors, and rewards unmatched to the volunteer handlers and their friendly canine. Perhaps you could visit Cecilia, an 81 year old woman living in Toms River.  She has owned dogs all her life but cannot have one now due to health issues.  She is looking for a friendly visit from a furry friend.  Could your dog be the one to bring a smile to her face?  Caregiver Canines visits are flexible only once or twice a month, and scheduled at a time that is convenient for you.

The Caregiver Canine Program of CVCJ began in 2009 and has been growing in leaps and bounds. “At this point we have so many requests for visits from our seniors, we need more therapy dogs and handlers.” said Danielle Maley who coordinates the program for CVCJ.  “We know folks really love their pets and would like to share that love with another person.  The Caregiver Canine Program is a win-win for everyone. We have many seniors in our area that are lonely and in need of some love and attention.” said Maley.   If you are interested in having your dog certified for pet therapy or being matched with a person in need through the Caregiver Canine Program, please contact Danielle Maley at 732-505-2273 ext. 202, or email daniellem@caregivervolunteers.org.
