Volunteers Honored for Work with Senior Citizens

Ocean County- More than 350 volunteers, the largest compliment of volunteers ever to participate in the event, were honored on April 7th at the Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey (CVCJ) 17th Annual Interfaith Worship Service and Appreciation Dinner.  Clergy from thirteen congregations in the CVCJ coalition participated in the Service at the First Methodist Church, Toms River.  Dinner was served by CVCJ Board members and was held in the Family Life Center of the Church.

The Asbury Park Press received special recognition for its on-going support for of CVCJ through timely coverage of CVCJ’s efforts to serve the frail elderly community of Ocean County.  Toms River Bureau Chief Joseph Cacchioli accepted the certificate on behalf of the Asbury Park Press.  Cacchioli commented on the exceptional service CVCJ volunteers provide to the homebound elderly and noted the importance of informing the broader community through the print media about volunteers, their work and the impact they make every day in the lives of isolated seniors. 

Employees from New Jersey Natural Gas VISION (Volunteers Inspiring Service in our Neighborhoods) assisted in preparing for the event, as did students from Toms River High School North involved with the “Caregiver Kids” intergenerational program.   Business sponsors for the evening were Briarmill Pharmacy, Brick; Care Alternatives Hospice, Wall; Visiting Physician Services, Eatontown; and United Water, Toms River.

 CVCJ is a non-profit interfaith agency whose mission is to assist the frail and homebound elderly with everyday tasks enabling them to remain independent in their own homes. All services provided are free.  Over 1000 volunteers assist more than 2000 senior citizens each month with transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, relief for Alzheimer’s disease caregivers, reassuring telephone calls, friendly/pet visits.
