Volunteer Appreciation Dinner - Author, NJNG Employees, and Local Businesses Support Seniors

Ocean County – On April 22, 2010, the First United Methodist Church in Toms River is hosting the Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey (CVCJ) 16th Annual Appreciation Dinner.  The event will begin with an interfaith service at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.  Today there are over 1,000 volunteers with CVCJ assisting over 2,000 frail and elderly each month.

The keynote speaker for the evening is author Dr. Paul Jellinek.  His book, Promise to Mary, a Story of Faith in Action, traces the real life experiences of both volunteers and those they cared for at the beginning of the Faith in Action movement, upon which CVCJ is based. Dr. Jellinek, who lives in Mercerville, is a former vice-president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where he was involved in the development of the Faith in Action Program. “We are delighted that Dr. Jellinek will be with us to share his experiences, strength and hope in care giving”, said Lynette Whiteman, Executive Director of CVCJ.

Employees from New Jersey Natural Gas VISION (Volunteers Inspiring Service in Our Neighborhoods), will be on-hand to help serve the dinner in honor of Caregiver Volunteers. Every year NJNG employees and retirees, with the help of their families and friends, generously give their own time to support community services like CVCJ.  Business sponsors of the evening are Briarmill Pharmacy, Brick; Care Alternatives Hospice, Wall; Visiting Physician Services, Eatontown; and Leisure Chateau, Lakewood.

CVCJ is a non-profit interfaith agency whose mission is to assist the frail and homebound elderly with everyday tasks enabling them to remain independent in their own homes. All services provided are free.  Over 1000 volunteers assist more than 2000 senior citizens each month with transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, relief for Alzheimer’s disease caregivers, reassuring telephone calls, friendly/pet visits.
